Some of the best things to do in Deptford

A great list of the great things to do in Deptford

Historically, Deptford hasn’t been high on people’s lists of places to visit – especially when compared to everything else the capital has to offer. But, Deptford is on the up and if you have a creative and artistic side, you’ll feel right at home here. Including wonderful venues and galleries, spots to relax and unwind, and a huge selection of places to grab a drink or bite to eat, you’ll be rather spoilt for choice.

So, if you’re looking to move into Deptford, things to do and places to see are likely to be high on your list of considerations. Below, we’ll run down some of our favourites.

A list of great things to do in Deptford

Whether you enjoy indulging in the arts or catching up with friends over a cocktail, there are plenty of things to do in Deptford. Here’s a selection of ways to whittle away the hours in one of our favourite areas of South East London.

Albany Theatre

Providing entertainment to both locals and those across the country since the late 19th century, the Albany Theatre is a fabulous venue with two theatres, rehearsal rooms, a cafe, a bar and more. It’s the perfect hub for creativity and celebrating the performing arts in the area. Including musicals, plays, comedians, workshops, discos, community events and more, the Albany offers something for everyone.

The venue has welcomed established talent like Elvis Costello and Vic and Bob, as well as hosts up-and-coming talent and shows for niche audiences. The Albany is proud to support new talent, so if you’re keen to discover the stars of tomorrow (as well as some of the stars of today) you should check out what’s coming soon at the Albany and grab yourself some reasonably priced tickets.

Matchstick Piehouse

Located beneath Deptford’s iconic railway arches, Matchstick Piehouse is an intimate 40-capacity venue that welcomes musicians, comedy, improv, poetry, experimental works and more. At least, it did. Due to the impact of the pandemic, the owners were hit with huge debts and the venue was forced to close in late 2023. However, there are currently efforts to turn it into a workers' co-op, so this quirky and unique venue can once again open its doors and reestablish itself as a key part of the Deptford community. Not only is the Matchstick Piehouse full of character, but it also offers affordably-priced tickets and ensures emerging artists have somewhere to find an audience. Keep your eye on this unique and character-filled venue for when it reopens.

A.P.T Gallery

The A.P.T (Art in Perpetuity Trust) Gallery is a gallery and studio on the banks of Deptford Creek that was established by artists, for artists. It offers galleries and 42 studio spaces for the creation and display of original works from local, up-and-coming and established artists who want their voices and work heard.

There are many exhibitions throughout the year, featuring work from all kinds of artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, printing and more.

It’s always worth a visit to the APT Gallery, not just to take in exciting creations from artists both new and established, but to support artists and their work. Exhibitions are usually free of charge, so you’ve got nothing to lose and absolutely loads to gain from paying the gallery a visit.

Deptford Market Yard

In the shadows of Deptford Station, Deptford Market Yard is a vibrant hub of eclectic food, drink, shopping and studios.

Each unit is bursting with charm and individuality within the easily recognisable railway arches. You could spend an entire day here tasting authentic international dishes, downing unique cocktails and partaking in a spot of shopping. At the weekends there are markets including the vintage market and carless car boot.

Deptford Market Yard is the perfect spot to relax and unwind and set the world to right with friends over a drink.

Deptford Park

Right in the heart of Deptford is Deptford Park, which has been a public park since way back in 1897, and is a large open green space that allows you to take time away from busy city life and enjoy a bit of downtime, have a picnic, play some sports or take the kids to burn off some energy at the massive playground. If you’re a fitness fanatic, you could use the park to run or use the free gym equipment.

Deptford Park is also a short walk from the banks of the River Thames and other green spaces including Pepys Park and Aragon Gardens.

Things to do nearby

With plenty of transport options, you’re never too far from the action in Deptford, so everything the city has to offer can be reached by tube, train, bus, walking or even water taxi. In nearby Greenwich, you could take a stroll through the famous Greenwich Park and pay a visit to the planetarium or observatory. Or, you could learn all about British maritime history at the British Maritime Museum or the iconic Cutty Sark.

Head west and you could catch a match at The Den, Millwall Football Club’s home ground, or keep fit in one of Southwark’s many sports and leisure facilities.

Pros and cons of living in London

Opinions on the country’s capital and the people who live there seem to waver depending on where you come from - type ‘why do Londoners’ into Google and your query will be finished with suggestions such as ‘walk so fast’ (they have places to be), ‘call a watch a kettle’ (Cockney rhyming slang), or ‘hate the north’ (you’ll have to be more specific). But, home to over 9 million people, there’s clearly something about London that keeps people flocking to it - more people move to London annually than move out of it.
